How to Lower Bitcoin Fee and See Transaction Size in Bitcoin Core

03:59
This video will show you how to find your transaction size in kb, so you can calculate your transaction fee, but also show how you can select certain bitcoins to send to lower your fee. First, go to your bitcoin core installation, go to settings, and then options. Then the wallet tab, and then enable coin control operations. This will make a new box appear on your send tab, titled coin control. If you hit inputs there, you will see a list of all of your BTC in your wallet, as seperate inputs. Each one you select will increase your transaction size, and also your fee. You can use this to tailor how much you send to get the lowest fee. There is also the change listing, where this is the difference between what you selected there, and the amount you input to send. The fee is also based on what you set as a fee at the bottom, it just shows you more calculations for how it is found, and the total fee. This makes the Bitcoin network congested, and the price of transaction fees rise. Watch this video to see how to modify the transaction fee in your wallet -- and the effect of setting low fees.

The Bitcoin and Blockchain Technology Explained

06:16
A block chain is a transaction database shared by all nodes participating in a system based on the Bitcoin protocol. A full copy of a currency's block chain contains every transaction ever executed in the currency. With this information, one can find out how much value belonged to each address at any point in history. ------------------------------------------------------------------- BUY BITCOIN SAFELY HERE: http://bit.ly/BuyBitcoinNow ------------------------------------------------------------------- REGISTER FOR A COINBASE ACCOUNT: http://bit.ly/CoinbaseBitcoinSignup ------------------------------------------------------------------- Every block contains a hash of the previous block. This has the effect of creating a chain of blocks from the genesis block to the current block. Each block is guaranteed to come after the previous block chronologically because the previous block's hash would otherwise not be known. Each block is also computationally impractical to modify once it has been in the chain for a while because every block after it would also have to be regenerated. These properties are what make double-spending of bitcoins very difficult. The block chain is the main innovation of Bitcoin. Honest generators only build onto a block (by referencing it in blocks they create) if it is the latest block in the longest valid chain. "Length" is calculated as total combined difficulty of that chain, not number of blocks, though this distinction is only important in the context of a few potential attacks. A chain is valid if all of the blocks and transactions within it are valid, and only if it starts with the genesis block. For any block on the chain, there is only one path to the genesis block. Coming from the genesis block, however, there can be forks. One-block forks are created from time to time when two blocks are created just a few seconds apart. When that happens, generating nodes build onto whichever one of the blocks they received first. Whichever block ends up being included in the next block becomes part of the main chain because that chain is longer. More serious forks have occurred after fixing bugs that required backward-incompatible changes. Blocks in shorter chains (or invalid chains) are not used for anything. When the bitcoin client switches to another, longer chain, all valid transactions of the blocks inside the shorter chain are re-added to the pool of queued transactions and will be included in another block. The reward for the blocks on the shorter chain will not be present in the longest chain, so they will be practically lost, which is why a network-enforced 100-block maturation time for generations exists. These blocks on the shorter chains are often called "orphan" blocks. This is because the generation transactions do not have a parent block in the longest chain, so these generation transactions show up as orphan in the listtransactions RPC call. Several pools have misinterpreted these messages and started calling their blocks "orphans". In reality, these blocks have a parent block, and might even have children. Because a block can only reference one previous block, it is impossible for two forked chains to merge. • How do Bitcoin Transactions Work? http://www.coindesk.com/information/how-do-bitcoin-transactions-work/ ------------------------------------------------------------------- DID YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO? ------------------------------------------------------------------- Enjoy this video? Bitcoin Q&A: Governance and the transaction fee market

05:54
Paris Merkle Conference Keywords/phrases: Establishing a transaction fee market. There is, and has been, a fee market for Bitcoin; it was not important until we reached critical capacity. Once you reach a point were capacity is constrained, fee markets come into play. Fee markets will happen, and if you don't build a primary fee market, people are going to build a secondary fee market. How do we create the possibility of fulfilling transactions at much greater volume for people who can't afford the current level of fee? Or if it continues to rise? The answer we seem to be arriving at is: secondary and tertiary layers above Bitcoin, the most promising of which is Lightning Network at the moment. Micro-transactions, nano-transactions.The Bitcoin blockchain is a very valuable commodity for applications; the fees make it so that it is not economical for everyone to use it as a back-up platform. No matter what capacity you create, an engineer will create an application to fill it. Fee markets help us make choices about which transactions are important. There are two ways to make choices: through authority or through a market. The market says "if the person sending the transaction thinks it's worth paying a fee, then it's a legitimate transaction." Because of this, adoption in some areas will require higher-level algorithms.

Bitcoin Transaction Details - Part 1

15:47
A look at how a transaction is constructed This video is part of a larger online course, "From Barter to Bitcoin: Society, Technology and the Future of Money" run by Prof. Bill Maurer and Prof. Donald J. Patterson In addition to the video on YouTube there is a variety of other content available to students enrolled in the class. "In 2008, a person calling himself or herself or themselves Satoshi Nakamoto released a paper suggesting a system for an anonymous, peer-to-peer alternative money. Bitcoin was born. Although not the first digital currency ever proposed, nor the first challenger to fiat money, bitcoin is the first to have captured the broad imagination of speculators, coders, regulators, criminals and the mass media. This course puts Bitcoin in context: how do we understand money as a social, political and technological phenomenon? From discussions of ancient transactions to the rise of state-issued currencies, we will explore the social and technical aspects of bitcoin, its predecessors and potential successors, and how its features echo aspects of many different historical transaction systems. No prior knowledge of economics or computing is required. There is little academic writing on bitcoin. And this may be the first truly academic class on the topic. We want to put bitcoin in a wider perspective, to reflect on what it means for society, politics and economics, as well as how it helps us think about money both a social and a technical phenomenon. This class is not an advanced seminar on bitcoin--we will not be delving deeply into the inner workings of the system, but instead providing a bird's-eye overview with enough technical detail for you to be able to put media stories, hype and hope around bitcoin in perspective. Similarly, this is not a class in monetary economics--we won't go too deeply into monetary theory or policy, the money supply, or inflation. Instead the class invites you to think more deeply about one of the oldest systems of technology on the planet, and most ubiquitous: money, whether coin, cash, credit card or cryptocurrency, we humans have been making money for most of the past 10,000 years. How we do so in the future is a question bitcoin just maybe helps us answer."

Blockchain 101 Ep 22 - Bitcoin Change Address

01:04
It is possible to send bitcoins from multiple addresses or send to multiple addresses in one go. For instance, you need to pay Mr Bull 5 Bitcoins and you only have 1, 2, and 2 Bitcoins in addresses A, B and C respectively. Neither wallet has enough to pay him. However, you can send him the Bitcoins from all 3 addresses to Mr Bull. Another scenario, you have 5 Bitcoins in your address. But you only want to send Mr Bull one. You need to inform the miners, “I have 5 Bitcoins, I want to send 1 to Mr Bull, and send the rest to myself.” It could be to either the original address, or to a new one. Don’t forget to do so! Otherwise, miners will take the rest of the Bitcoins as transaction fee. This is how Bitcoin’s change addresses work. Watch the video here! Huobi Pro will post a question in our Tweet via our Twitter account (https://twitter.com/Huobi_Pro) each time we put up an episode of Blockchain 101 post on our Twitter account, we will randomly select 20 people who answered in the format [UIDxxxxxxxx, correct answer] and retweet our post will be entitled to 1 HT each. Blockchain 101 Ep 16 - What's the fee for Bitcoin transactions?

01:07
Bitcoin transaction fees give Bitcoin miners an incentive to include transactions into their blocks and provide sufficient hashing power, securing the Bitcoin network. Some also call it “miner fees”. When making a transaction over the Bitcoin network, one usually pays for miners to facilitate the transaction. The fee tends to be around 0.0001-0.0015 Bitcoin. Block sizes are limited and can only support limited number of transactions. Therefore, miners will prioritize transactions that pay higher fees. A higher fee means the transaction can be processed sooner. This raises the threshold of making Bitcoin transactions and also effectively protects the blockchain from spams while ensuring miners still have the incentive to maintain the Bitcoin network even after all the Bitcoins are mined. Blockchain 101 Ep 17 - Why are Bitcoin transactions charged by bytes?

01:15
Our banks usually charge a fee based on a percentage of the transaction amount we are sending. For example, 0.5% for inter-bank transactions. 0.1-1% for transactions across different cities, and for transnational transfers, on top of the commission fees, there are additional cable charges too. For cryptocurrencies, transaction fees are based on the size of the transaction in bytes, not the amount transferred. For instance, an average Bitcoin transaction takes up 250 bytes, the transaction fee will be around 0.001-0.0015 Bitcoin. If you’re sending Bitcoins to multiple addresses in one transaction, then the transaction will be a larger byte size, hence you may want to pay a higher transaction fee, in order to attract miners to process your transaction. Yet, from a cost perspective, it is highly advantageous to utilize blockchain technology for cross-border transactions. Are Low Transaction Fees Keynesian?

Today I discuss a recent article by Jimmy Song who tries to call Bitcoin Cash and its low transaction fee model Keynesian while Bitcoin Segwit's high transaction fee is Austrian. In this video I explain why this argument holds no ground.

Why Bitcoin's Price Continues To Rise

17:47
Bitcoin continues to rise in the face of all challenges: Contentious hard forks, government intervention, mindless attacks... and stagnant transaction volume. I don't hear many people talk about this - the fact that the rolling daily transaction volume for Bitcoin hasn't done diddly squat over the past year, yet price has gone up 900%. If there is ONE fundamental metric we can all agree upon for Bitcoin, it is the number of transactions completed using the cryptocurrency. Yet we remain at approximately 250 - 350k transactions a day, while Paypal averaged approximately 21 million transactions a day in Q3'17. It's even worse when you consider the fact that transactions between exchanges (not inside) are included, which I don't really consider "adoption." Yet despite this, Bitcoin continues to skyrocket. The best argument out there is that Bitcoin is stealing part of gold's market share as a store of value, and given that gold is over a $7T market, Bitcoin is still peanuts compared to the size it could grow to. However, when I hear most people talk about Bitcoin, they talk about how it will replace governments, take over banks and revolution P2P transactions - all of which require a SUBSTANTIAL increase in transaction volume. I argue Bitcoin continues to rise for these reasons: 1) FOMO Investing 2) Incremental Value created by news event due to inability or lack of skill for finding a fair value for Bitcoin to converge to by most market participants 3) Price Memory 4) Increased market share for "store of value" What are your thoughts? I'd love to hear them in the comments. ================ If you like my content, you can support me through using ANY of the affiliate links below (I receive small compensation). The beauty of affiliate links is that I can pick and choose what I like rather than have companies approach me - everything I linked below (with the exception of Trezor since I like Ledger), I use myself frequently. ================ My Recommended Hardware Wallets: If you want to store your cryptocurrencies safely, the best way is through a hardware wallet. Seriously - look it up and you'll find plenty of information supporting this claim. There are alternatives such as paper wallets, but these are convenient and my choice for cold storage (offline): Ledger Nano S: http://amzn.to/2hZPj0q Trezor: http://amzn.to/2AxD9TN Ledger Blue (expensive): http://amzn.to/2hk7xst I personally prefer the Ledger Nano S, but the Trezor is such a close second that it really doesn't matter which one you go with. Ledger Blue is premium and convenient, but not necessary. ================ My Favorite Book for Investing in Crypto: Cryptoassets: http://amzn.to/2zKDdCF This book is, bar none, my favorite book for investing in cryptocurrencies. It doesn't bog you down with technical jargon, but instead focuses on all the elements you should understand before you invest. It's a comprehensive book for both beginners and experts. Beginners will find information about major cryptocurrencies (not just Bitcoin) as well as details on historical market events (that you can draw on for future) and events to watch for moving into the future. Experts will find the chapters on valuation particularly useful. For those of you involved in traditional investing, this book is even more of a godsend as finance info is explored (correlations with other asset classes, ETFs, etc). ================ My Recommended Exchanges: Coinbase / GDAX / Bittrex https://www.coinbase.com/join/5a08b12e305a1401d79d10e0 If you sign up to Coinbase using link above, you and I will both receive $10 each after you buy your first $100 of Bitcoin using Coinbase. Coinbase is much less intimidating for beginners. Once ready, move up to GDAX for cheaper or zero fees. For altcoins, I recommend Bittrex. ================ Legal Stuff: I am a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for me to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. Bitcoin Q&A: Reflections on the last five years

07:12
What is the most significant thing you've changed your mind on with respect to cryptocurrencies in the last five years? Making predictions with certainty in a new and fast-paced industry; under-estimating the resilience of Bitcoin; the social attack / argument surface. If you were to make one change to Bitcoin, what would it be? I would like to see more implementations of privacy features, which is already happening. However, no one person gets to make changes to Bitcoin. There is not much else I would change in the original design; I think it would be hubris even for me to say I can do it better. There has been a "next Bitcoin" that fixed supposed fatal flaws ever year since the beginning of Bitcoin, but none have superseded its design choices aimed at security, censorship resistance, and decentralisation. (And no, market capitalisation is not a great measurement for comparison.) This is a question from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on February 24th 2018. 21:55
This is part 26 of the Blockchain tutorial explaining how to make a bitcoin transaction. A real demonstration is given how to make a bitcoin transaction on the Bitcoin Testnet. This tutorial shows the following: - How to create multiple public and private bitcoin Testnet key pairs. - How to claim some bitcoins from a faucet and transfer it to a sender address. - How to make a bitcoin transaction by transferring all bitcoins from a sender address to receiver address. This tutorial also explains: - What UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) is. - What a confirmation is. In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. Bitcoin released as open source software in 2009 is a cryptocurrency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto (unidentified person or group of persons). After the introduction of Bitcoin many Bitcoin alternatives were created. These alternate cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins (Litecoin, Dodgecoin etc). Bitcoin's underlying technology is called Blockchain. The Blockchain is a distributed decentralized incorruptible database (ledger) that records blocks of digital information. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. Soon people realises that there many other use cases where the Blockchain technology can be applied and not just as a cryptocurrency application. New Blockchain platforms were created based on the Blockchain technology, one of which is called Ethereum. Ethereum focuses on running programming code, called smart contracts, on any decentralized application. Using the new Blockchain platforms, Blockchain technology can be used in supply chain management, healthcare, real estate, identity management, voting, internet of things, etcetera, just to name a few. Today there is a growing interest in Blockchain not only in the financial sector but also in other sectors. Explaining how Blockchain works is not easy and for many the Blockchain technology remains an elusive concept. This video series tries to explain Blockchain to a large audience but from the bottom up. Keywords often used in Blockchain conversation will be explained. Each Blockchain video is short and to the point. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier.
