What is Ethereum? A Simple Explanation Anyone Can Understand

What is Ethereum? A Simple Explanation Anyone Can Understand You'll receive $10 in free bitcoin by signing up with this link http://bit.ly/2oesV41 Blockchain Revolution Book: http://amzn.to/2nXGGqY Buy Ethereum: http://bit.ly/2oesV41 Ethereum Course: http://courses.blockgeeks.com/ What is Ethereum for beginners? At its simplest, Ethereum is an open software platform based on blockchain technology that enables developers to build and deploy decentralized applications. Is Ethereum similar to Bitcoin? Well, sort of, but not really. Like Bitcoin, Ethereum is a distributed public blockchain network. Although there are some significant technical differences between the two, the most important distinction to note is that Bitcoin and Ethereum differ substantially in purpose and capability. Bitcoin offers one particular application of blockchain technology, a peer to peer electronic cash system that enables online Bitcoin payments. While the bitcoin blockchain is used to track ownership of digital currency (bitcoins), the Ethereum blockchain focuses on running the programming code of any decentralized application. In the Ethereum blockchain, instead of mining for bitcoin, miners work to earn Ether, a type of crypto token that fuels the network. Beyond a tradeable cryptocurrency, Ether is also used by application developers to pay for transaction fees and services on the Ethereum network. “Bitcoin is first and foremost a currency; this is one particular application of a blockchain. However, it is far from the only application. To take a past example of a similar situation, e-mail is one particular use of the internet, and for sure helped popularise it, but there are many others.” Dr Gavin Wood, Ethereum Co-Founder What is a smart contract? Smart contract is just a phrase used to describe computer code that can facilitate the exchange of money, content, property, shares, or anything of value. When run on the blockchain a smart contract becomes like a self-operating computer program that automatically executes when specific conditions are met. Because smart contracts run on the blockchain, they run exactly as programmed without any possibility of censorship, downtime, fraud or third party interference. Vitalik Buterin explains Ethereum

03:28
3 minute explanation of Ethereum by inventor Vitalik Buterin. Ethereum is a platform that makes it possible for any developer to write and distribute next-generation decentralized applications. Borrowing the concept of distributed consensus and cryptographic proof that makes cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin so effective in trustless payments, Ethereum extends the use of these technologies to trustless agreements. This allows developers to easily build innovative new products on a censorship and collusion-resistant foundation. Ethereum will go live in Q4 2014, in the meantime we are regularly releasing alpha software so you can try your hand at building distributed applications. When planning to write smart contracts you will realize that you are going to spend real ether if you are on the main ethereum network which will cost you real ethers. There is a way around that by creating a private network andlders on various platforms : Mac: ~/Library/Ethereum Linux: ~/.ethereum Windows: %APPDATA%\Ethereum do all your development and testing on private-net. Once you think you are good with your smart code contract you can then deploy it to the main network. Path for the ethereum data fo

Intro To Geth: Create Your Private Ethereum Blockchain - in 5 mins

04:29
Welcome to this introduction to Geth. In this video, we will learn about Geth, which is the most popular client for the Ethereum blockchain app platform. We will also learn how to download, install and configure Geth. Finally, we will learn to create an Ethereum account using Geth. Let’s start with a quick overview of Geth. Geth is the C L I or command line interface for running a full Ethereum node. It is implemented in the Go programming language, but does not require its users to have proficiency in Go. It is free to download and install. Geth supports most major operating systems. In this video, we will focus on the Windows version of Geth. Now let’s look at what Geth can do. Geth can be overwhelming due to its long list of commands, but for now we will focus on three key use cases. First, Geth is used to mine, in other words, to create blocks that are published to the Ethereum blockchain. The miner receives Ethereum currency or “Ether” as a reward for doing so. Secondly, Geth is used to create and manage Ethereum accounts. Accounts can store Ether. Geth also lets you transfer Ether between accounts . This transfer of Ether between accounts is known as a transaction. Lastly , Geth is used to create contracts. Contracts can receive transfers just like regular accounts. However, they can also receive more complicated transactions that run code, and optionally, update the state of the contract. In this series of videos, we will build a simple contract using Geth. Note that we will not be mining any real Ether currency in this video. We’ll need to do a couple of things before we can dive into Geth. First, download and install Geth by going to the download page on the Ethereum site. Choose the Windows 64-bit installer for version 1.5.6, which should work on most modern Windows systems. Run the installer like you would any other installer. Next, we’ve created some helper scripts to make learning Geth easy. Head over to the github URL that you see here. Click the green "clone or download" button, and select "Download zip". Unzip the zip file that is downloaded. You should see a folder called “nugget1”. We will use that folder for our first lab with Geth. Ok, let’s dive into our lab. As a prerequisite, you’ll need to be comfortable using the Windows command line. Some exposure to programming languages is helpful but not required. Now, start the Windows command line. Head into the nugget1 folder. For the purposes of this exercise, we’ll create a private blockchain. Initialize this blockchain with the “genesis block” or first block. Use the helper script genesis to do so. Now that the blockchain has been initialized, let’s create our first account. We will use the Javascript console that comes with Geth. Start this console using the helper script "console". Once the console is up and running, type “personal.new Account” to create your first account. Provide a password that you can remember. You will be asked to enter it twice. Geth responds with a long hex string that represents your account address. Congratulations! You have created your first Ethereum account on your own private Ethereum network! So let’s recap what we learned today. We learned about the key features of Geth, how to download and install it, how to start a new blockchain, and how to create an account. Stay tuned for the next video in this series! *** Note: Comments were turned off. This channel is built on spare time, and the author was unable to answer Ethereum technical questions. What is a Smart Contract? A Beginner’s Guide

Smart contracts help you exchange money, property, shares, or anything of value in a transparent, conflict-free way, while avoiding the services of a middleman. The best way to describe smart contracts is to compare the technology to a vending machine. Ordinarily, you would go to a lawyer or a notary, pay them, and wait while you get the document. With smart contracts, you simply drop a bitcoin into the vending machine (i.e. ledger), and your escrow, driver’s license, or whatever drops into your account. More so, smart contracts not only define the rules and penalties around an agreement in the same way that a traditional contract does, but also automatically enforce those obligations. Example Suppose you rent an apartment from me. You can do this through the blockchain by paying in cryptocurrency. You get a receipt which is held in our virtual contract; I give you the digital entry key which comes to you by a specified date. If the key doesn’t come on time, the blockchain releases a refund. If I send the key before the rental date, the function holds it releasing both the fee and key to you and me respectively when the date arrives. The system works on the If-Then premise and is witnessed by hundreds of people, so you can expect a faultless delivery. If I give you the key, I’m sure to be paid. If you send a certain amount in bitcoins, you receive the key. The document is automatically cancelled after the time, and the code cannot be interfered by either of us without the other knowing, since all participants are simultaneously alerted. You can use smart contracts for all sort of situations that range from financial derivatives to insurance premiums, breach contracts, property law, credit enforcement, financial services, legal processes and crowd funding agreements. Vitalik Buterin and Vlad Zamfir: The Ethereum Roadmap and Solving the Blockchain Scalability Problem

55:36
Subscribe to Hidden Forces here: http://www.hiddenforces.io In Episode 49 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Vitalik Buterin and Vlad Zamfir about the future roadmap for Ethereum. If contracts are the foundation of modern civilization, then our record systems are the infrastructure that keep this foundation from falling apart. These features allow our society to establish and verify identities; give value to goods and services; create and enforce laws; govern interactions between individuals, organizations, and nations — in short, they secure our social, economic, and political policies and allow us to maintain the social order. But there is a problem with these systems, and they are beginning to buckle and crack. The information age vastly accelerated the pace of society, allowing individuals to dramatically expand their circles of influence. People can now exchange goods and services (or even enter into contracts) with strangers on the other side of the globe instantaneously. Government agencies and international organizations can maximize processes by storing and retrieving information online. However, these processes are fraught with challenges. Without the presence of intermediaries, digital transactions have thus far been impossible to verify or enforce. Mediators and middlemen provide accountability on the one hand, in return for higher centralization on the other. This centralization creates opportunities for companies like Facebook and Google to make billions of dollars mining and selling our data. It also presents lucrative opportunities for malicious actors looking to capitalize on our insecure digital infrastructure. The digital records kept by banks and government institutions are frequently the subject of cyber attacks, putting this same data at risk. As the first decentralized digital currency, bitcoin promised to solve some of these issues; however, bitcoin's use cases have remained limited to a very narrow set of financial transactions. In response, Vitalik Buterin created Ethereum. In his 2013 white paper, Vitalik outlined an ambitious vision of the future — one that would endeavor to solve the problems associated with our contracts, transactions, and records by creating a new, decentralized layer for data processing and computation on which society could run. Whereas Bitcoin’s aim was to erect a platform for unmediated digital payments, the goal of Ethereum’s blockchain-based architecture is to entirely dismantle traditional power structures and methods of control. It attempts this by allowing decentralization to saturate all levels of society through the use of an open, distributed ledger that records transactions between parties in a more trusted way way. In Ethereum blockchain, contracts are embedded within digital code, which are stored in transparent, shared databases. In theory, it makes intermediaries like bankers and lawyers unnecessary and allows individuals to transact freely. Ethereum increase access, transparency, and accountability, without relying on third-parties to secure the ledger. Ethereum blockchain has opened the door to a new type of economy, yet challenges remain — specifically, challenges to scale. The most prominent of these scaling challenges has been transaction throughput. Currently, the Ethereum network can process no more than fifteen transactions per second (TPS). This is major barrier to widespread adoption and it has prevented the blockchain from being able to support the type of network traffic that would result from the popular use of any decentralized application (dApp). In response, Vitalik, Vlad, and other key members of the Ethereum have put forward a roadmap for scaling the Ethereum network. From sharding to Plasma to Casper, in this week’s episode, host Demetri Kofinas is joined by Vlad Zamfir, one of is the world’s leading Ethereum researchers, and Vitalik Buterin to discuss the future of Ethereum, the problems it faces on the path to widespread adoption, and the solutions that promise to carry us into a decentralized digital age. Ethereum Q&A: Smart contract platforms

09:09
What is the best platform for smart contracts? What makes Ethereum interesting to you? So far, most of the platforms experimenting with smart contracts, besides Ethereum, are either still in the roadmap or early testing phases of development (i.e. federated sidechains and drivechains). Most of the so-called "third generation" blockchains have not been able to differentiate sufficiently from the first and second generation blockchains. We cannot draw very accurate conclusions without being able to compare them at scale. When I speak about Ethereum, I am speaking more broadly than the ETH token and blockchain, but rather virtual machine-based, Turing complete, programmable blockchain for smart contracts. During the maturation of this technology, there are going to be a lot of governance missteps and security vulnerabilities because they are choosing flexibility over security in the tradeoff. Ethereum can't do what Bitcoin does. Having a robust, simple script language and conservative, reliable development is a strong differentiating factor. The biggest challenge for both Bitcoin and Ethereum moving forward is privacy. This is a question from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on December 16th 2017. A hack of Ethereum’s Decentralised Autonomous Organisation fund (The DAO) led to an Ethereum Blockchain hard fork. However, the original blockchain found support, and a talented team now leads the Ethereum Classic blockchain platform in an exciting new direction. Deploying A Smart Contract To The Ethereum Blockchain w/ Mist

16:58
Ethereum is a blockchain platform that supports smart contracts. Smart contracts are just tiny programs (a set of rules) written in the solidity programming language that can get pushed on the Ethereum blockchain, and get executed as necessary. In this "Hello World" example, we look at a very basic Ethereum Smart Contract to create our own token. We install Ethereum Mist/Wallet on our computer and use it as the way to deploy our contract onto the blockchain. We then look at how the contract is able to be used after it gets pushed onto the blockchain. Getting Started with Ethereum Solidity Development by Sebastien Arbogast and Said Eloudrhiri

02:47:25
Last year we demonstrated why open blockchains were such a big deal and the kind of opportunities they opened with our talk titled "Why you should really care about the blockchain" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQVxbPqlBkE). This year, we are going to take you with us on a journey to create and develop your first decentralized application on the Ethereum blockchain. Setting up your development environment, developing your first smart contract, unit testing it, deploying it to various instances of the chain, creating a user interface for your app, you will do it all. # Sebastien Arbogast Sebastien started his career as a Java software consultant, with a strong focus on productivity. He was a strong advocate of Model-Driven Architecture before discovering Groovy and Grails. Then he also started developing iOS applications, and in 2011, he created his first startup, Kodesk. After learning a lot as an entrepreneur, he co-created the NEST'up startup accelerator program and coached several startups on the Lean Startup tools and techniques. In 2016, he created the ChainSkills initiative with Said Eloudrhiri to educate people about the power and techniques of open blockchains as a development platform. # Said Eloudrhiri Said has started his career in 1992. As an IT Consultant, he was involved in several missions as a developer, Team Leader and Agile coach. As a co-organiser of the Wajug, Said helps in the organisation of talks for IT professionals. He is also a passionate trainer that learns kids to program games and robotics through the Wajug and Devoxx4Kids initiatives. In 2016, he created the ChainSkills initiative with Sébastien Arbogast to educate people about the power and techniques of open blockchains as a development platform.
