A brief history of money - From gold to bitcoin and cryptocurrencies

06:28
A brief history of money - let's consider the concept of money as an abstraction of value. Money is as old as human civilisation and civilisation itself is reliant on possessing ways in which to exchange, account for, and transfer value. What once started as barter trade (trading goods for goods) was replaced using standardized token money. Gold and silver were the first universally accepted natural choices for money. Actually, they fit the bill so well that they were the primary form of money for centuries across the globe and have been instilled in human culture... I bet when I say "gold" you instinctively think of value or wealth. After this came paper money – a more user-friendly way to carry and move around value compared to precious metals. China was the first to adopt it in the 7th century. The first European banknotes weren't issued until the 17th century. It took people several centuries to accept the new paradigm at the time and shift from gold and silver coins to banknotes backed by these same precious metals as the widely used form of money. This led to the birth of 'the gold standard'. The banknotes themselves didn't hold any intrinsic value like gold and silver coins do. Instead, paper money was backed by precious metals (like gold and silver) stored in a treasury vault somewhere. This was the case until 1944. At the end of World War II, yet another related system was introduced, the "gold exchange standard", under the Bretton Woods agreement. This meant that many countries fixed their national currencies’ exchange rates to the US dollar which was in turn convertible to gold at a fixed rate. Not only that, but this convertibility was no longer available to individuals or companies, only to central banks. However, the Bretton Woods system ended in 1971, when the US dollar convertibility to gold was terminated. So long "the gold standard" and commodity-linked money. Paper money is no longer backed by gold or anything else tangible but just faith! Welcome to the world of fiat currencies! So how does paper hold any value if it's not backed by anything? Well, that's where concepts like legal tender come in. The fiat system, which we still use today, has governments assign value to a currency, declaring it a legal tender. This means a government decides whether a medium of payment will be recognised for financial transactions, trade settlement or commerce in a country or jurisdiction. Throughout all these stages we had an idea of value in our mind but it has evolved hand in hand with our civilisation and technology. From something you can touch and actually use, to something you can touch but cannot use except for trade, to just an abstract idea. Check Top 100 Richest Bitcoin Address: https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@advexon/top-100-richest-bitcoin-address Evolution of f Bitcoin - Full Documentary 2017 [HD] Bitcoin is a form of digital currency, created and held electronically. No one controls it. Bitcoins aren’t printed, like dollars or euros – they’re produced by people, and increasingly businesses, running computers all around the world, using software that solves mathematical problems. It’s the first example of a growing category of money known as cryptocurrency. What makes it different from normal currencies? Bitcoin can be used to buy things electronically. In that sense, it’s like conventional dollars, euros, or yen, which are also traded digitally. However, bitcoin’s most important characteristic, and the thing that makes it different to conventional money, is that it is decentralized. No single institution controls the bitcoin network. This puts some people at ease, because it means that a large bank can’t control their money. Who created it? A software developer called Satoshi Nakamoto proposed bitcoin, which was an electronic payment system based on mathematical proof. The idea was to produce a currency independent of any central authority, transferable electronically, more or less instantly, with very low transaction fees. Who prints it? No one. This currency isn’t physically printed in the shadows by a central bank, unaccountable to the population, and making its own rules. Those banks can simply produce more money to cover the national debt, thus devaluing their currency. Instead, bitcoin is created digitally, by a community of people that anyone can join. Bitcoins are ‘mined’, using computing power in a distributed network. This network also processes transactions made with the virtual currency, effectively making bitcoin its own payment network. * Subscribe for more Scientific & Technological Videos * Like & Share * go to our website http://www.advexon.com * Share your ideas and comment

The Road to Bitcoin: A brief history of currency

08:27
Bitcoin Mania is here, many believe that it will go mainstream and it already has in some ways. As of this year, many companies accept Bitcoin as payment including Microsoft, Overstock, Dish Network and Paypal. Some analysts believe that a Bitcoin will be worth $100,000 each in 10 years! So what’s all the fuss about Bitcoin? Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, which is a decentralized digital currency that isn’t controlled by a single entity such as a bank or a government, it is controlled by software and everyone who uses it and the software continually logs and validates all transactions, and being open sourced and used on a peer to peer network, it is impossible to tamper with. Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a blockchain, which is a fancy term for a ledger. A block is a list of records, and as transactions happen, the chain grows. This blockchain, since its run on a peer to peer network, is completely transparent. If this is hard to imagine, you can see the ledger yourself at Blockchain.com. the link is in the description. Once there, simply move your cursor to products and click on Info Explorer. From here to can explore the latest blocks mined, the height is the name of the ledger as they are named in the sequential order. And when you click on a block you can see it’s transaction history as can anyone else. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are anonymous yet transparent, decentralized and tamperproof, doesn’t that sound like the future of currency? But when did currency begin? The History of Bitcoin

12:11
The History of Bitcoin - https://blockgeeks.com/ We’ll start at the very beginning by understanding the history of blockchain. The very first blockchain in the world was Bitcoin. An anonymous person or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto published a document in an online cryptography forum in November 2008 and revealed the first details of how it would work, describing it as a “peer-to-peer electronic cash system”. The whitepaper is available today at bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf. It allows any 2 people to pseudonymously send money to each other no matter where they are in the world. It is a borderless currency. The main benefit of Bitcoin is that it does not require any centralized authority or institution to operate. This is in contrast to today’s centralized financial systems that depend on the existence of a central bank or government to mint money. If for any reason the central authority were to shutdown, the money would become worthless. In a decentralized system like Bitcoin, there is no central authority and the system can continue to operate as long as there are members in its peer-to-peer network. The goal of the whitepaper was to describe how the different parts of the Bitcoin protocol would operate and be kept secure. A new type of database, called a blockchain, would keep track of a single history of all Bitcoin transactions and it would be maintained by everyone in the network. The database would be publicly available for anyone to view and inspect, and anyone can download a copy of the same database. This provides data redundancy and makes sure the data is never lost, but also provides a way for anyone to verify the transactions in the database themselves. A block in the database just stores a sequence of transactions, and a sequence of blocks is called a blockchain. Each block is identified by an incrementing number and a unique Sha-256 hash. The hash for a block is calculated using the transactions inside it, as well as the previous block’s hash, which forms a chain of hashes. The data in the blocks is secured using a cryptographic algorithm called proof-of-work, which also keeps all members of the network and the database in sync to prevent double-spending. In this context, preventing double-spending means preventing anyone from spending money they dont have. Proof-of-work is used to generate new blocks for the database, also known as mining, and the reward for mining a new block is given to the miner by creating new Bitcoins in the system. This is the only way new Bitcoins can be created. Anyone on the network can be a miner and a new block is mined roughly every 10 minutes, which includes the latest set of verified transactions. The first release for Bitcoin was version 0.1 written in C++ by Satoshi and published on SourceForge in January 2009 under the open-source MIT license. Anyone could download the source code and run it to join the network, also known as becoming a node in the network. This is the original version 0.1 source code written by Satoshi. We can see the hard-coded genesis block, which is the very first block in the chain. The hash for the block can be verified by using any Bitcoin blockchain explorer. Let’s copy and paste this hash into the blockchain explorer available at blockchain.info. We can see that this hash is for block number 0, and that it has only one transaction in it which is the mining reward, and the reward amount of 50 Bitcoin was given to this Bitcoin address. We can also see this 50 Bitcoin reward for the genesis block in the original source code. The genesis block is a special case needed to start the blockchain and is the only block that is hard-coded, whereas every subsequent block is calculated using proof-of-work. Satoshi’s motivation for creating Bitcoin is revealed in the piece of data he included in the genesis block: a newspaper headline from The Times that read ‘Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks’. The date of the newspaper is proof that the genesis block was created on or after Jan 3 2009. Satoshi developed the source code mostly himself up until mid-2010, when he handed it off to the open-source community. It is now maintained under the project called Bitcoin Core. The software is currently at version 0.15.1 and is available for download at bitcoin.org. This is still the most popular Bitcoin client, and its estimated that there are over 10 thousand nodes running the Bitcoin network today using various clients. Satoshi disappeared from public view in late 2010, his identity still unknown to this day. The only way someone could prove that they are Satoshi is by using the same encryption keys used when posting the original whitepaper in the online cryptography forum. For 10% off your first purchase, go to https://www.squarespace.com/nerdyandquirky Check out my website ➤ https://www.nerdyandquirky.com/ Recently, we have seen the rise of cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin. But leading the charge has always been Bitcoin... but what is Bitcoin? How does Bitcoin work? And how do you even make Bitcoin? Well, Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and worldwide payment system. It is the first decentralized digital currency, as the system works without a central bank or single administrator. The network is peer-to-peer and transactions take place between users directly, without an intermediary. These transactions are verified by network nodes through the use of cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group of people under the name Satoshi Nakamoto and released as open-source software in 2009. But we delve a little deeper into the evolution of Bitcoin in this episode of Cool History! Money & Debt: Crash Course World History 202

14:04
In which John Green teaches about filthy, filthy lucre. Money. And Debt. So, what is money? And what is it for? And why do we use money? And why does it all disappear so quickly after payday? John will look into 75% of these questions, and if he doesn't come up with answers, we'll get into some interesting ideas along the way, at least. This week we'll investigate whether money displaces barter, then leads to war, slavery, and what we think of as civilized social orders. We'll also see what old Adam Smith thinks of big money, no whammies, this week on Crash Course. We'll also talk quite a bit about Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber. You can buy that book here: http://dft.ba/-debt5000 You can directly support Crash Course at https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse Subscribe for as little as $0 to keep up with everything we're doing. Voorhees won by changing the minds of 15 percent of attendees. The Soho Forum is held every month at the SubCulture Theater in Manhattan's East Village. At the next debate, which will be held on August 27, William Easterly, professor of economics at NYU, and Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize Winner in economics and professor at Columbia, will discuss whether free markets or government action is the best way to eliminate global poverty. Why Bitcoin is Better Than Gold, with Wences Casares

07:18
Xapo CEO and founder Wences Casares explains why, after a 5,000 year reign, gold has been surpassed by bitcoin as the ideal ledger. Don't miss new Big Think videos!  Subscribe by clicking here: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Transcript: Bitcoin is a new digital currency that is perhaps the best form of money that we have ever seen. It’s important because most of us don’t understand money very well and perhaps the concept that is hardest for us to understand about money is that money is and has always been a ledger. And people often ask: "What is money backed with?" And the truth is money’s not backed with anything. It has never been backed with anything. The euro is not backed with anything in particular and neither is any other currency in the world. And gold, for example for that matter is not backed with anything either. Some people think that gold has value because we use it for jewelry but it’s actually the other way around. Gold is valuable because it’s very scarce and because it’s very scarce it has been the best ledger we’ve found in 5,000 years. In bitcoin we have something that is as good a ledger as gold, meaning it’s incredibly scarce. There will never be more than 21 million bitcoin. It’s even more scarce than gold. But in history we have had this tradeoff between things that have been very, very good store of value like gold for example and things that have been good for payment like the Portuguese escudo, the U.S. dollar, American Airline miles, or Facebook credits. Those things are better for payment but they’re not so good as a store of value historically. And the things that are good for a store of value like gold are not good for payments. In bitcoin we have something for the first time that is incredibly superior than anything we have seen before as a store value and also as a form of payment. It’s hard to have a rigorous discussion about bitcoin without understanding money. And the best way to understand money is to understand the history of money. Anthropologists agree that there’s no tribe, much less a civilization, that ever based its commerce on barter. There’s no evidence. Barter never happened. And that’s counterintuitive to most of us because we are taught in school that we first barter and then we made money because barter was too complicated. Well, barter never happened and that’s one of the key myths about money. So then you would ask the anthropologists, "So how did we do commerce before money if there was no barter? There was no commerce." No, there was plenty of commerce and the way that commerce would happen is that let’s say that someone in our tribe killed a big buffalo and I would go up to a person and say hey, "Can I have a little bit of meat?" And that person would say "No" or "Yes, Wences, here’s your meat." And then you would go up to a person and say "Hey, can I have a little bit of meat?" and that person said "Yes, here’s your meat."And basically we all have to keep track in our heads of what we owed other people or what our people owed us. And then someone would come to me and say "Hey Wences, can I have a little bit of firewood?" and I would say "Sure, here’s your firewood." And I have to remember that I owe that person a little bit, that this person owes me a little. And we all went about our business with these ledgers in our minds of who owes us what and what do we owe to whom. Very subjective system often these debts didn’t clear or clear in ways that were not satisfactory to both parties. Until about 25,000 years ago someone very, very intelligent came up with a new technology that really took off. So a person came to me and said "Hey, can I have a little bit of firewood?" and I said "Sure, here’s your firewood." And this person said "This time we’re going to try something different. Here are some beads for you." And I said "I don’t want beads. I don’t care for beads. I don’t need beads." He said "It’s not about that. We are going to use beads as the objective ledger of our tribe. Instead of each of us having to remember what we are owed the beads are going to keep track for us. An objective ledger to keep track of debt." [TRANSCRIPT TRUNCATED] Directed/Produced by Jonathan Fowler, Elizabeth Rodd, and Dillon Fitton
