Blockchain/Bitcoin for beginners 8: Bitcoin addresses, public key hash, P2PKH transactions

23:28
Before we delve into the inner workings of a bitcoin transaction I wanted to explain how the actual bitcoin address is derived from the public key which in turn is derived from the private key. I take through step by step all the steps required to derived the checksums etc and show with a real example of a real bitcoin transaction. Also discuss why checksums are included in Bitcoin addresses in order to eliminate the possibility of characters being corrupted, or modified in transit. This is the cool tool for converted from base 58 encoded value to hex value. http://lenschulwitz.com/base58 Good link talking about base 58 encoding. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Base58Check_encoding

Como funcionam as transações de Bitcoin? Address, Public Key, Private Key, Wallet

11:33

What Is A Bitcoin Wallet? - The Best Explanation EVER

04:06
This is a free sample lesson from 'The Secrets Of The Bitcoin Triangle' course, where you will 'Discover The 21 Fast Track Ways To Make And Save With Bitcoin (Starting From Scratch)'. You can sign up for the full course at: https://www.cryptoversity.com/courses/secrets-of-the-bitcoin-triangle/ A Bitcoin wallet is a piece of software you use to communicate with the Bitcoin network and tell it when you want to send and receive transactions. The best way to understand a Bitcoin wallet is by comparing it to email. Once you have setup an email address you need some kind of software to allow you to send and receive emails to that address. Now this software may be an app on your phone, it may be an app on your laptop or it could even be an app you log into online. With email, you enter the username and password for your email address into the app and that’s how the Internet knows it’s really you that is sending and receive emails to that address. Now of course you tell everyone your email address and you have to do that in order for anyone to send you a message. But just because someone knows your email address, that doesn’t allow them to send email from that address. If they could that would be bad because then they could send emails pretending to be you and cause all kinds of problems. In order to be allowed to send email from a particular email address, you have to know the password. If someone finds out your email password then there’s nothing stopping them from logging in to your email app and sending messages. This is very similar to how a Bitcoin wallet works. Every Bitcoin account has two elements to it. One is called your public address, which is like your email address, and one is called your private key, which is like your password. So just like email, you can give anyone your Bitcoin public address and then anyone, anywhere in the world can send you some Bitcoin. They don’t need to know anything about you. All they need is that public address and they can send money to you. Your Bitcoin private key on the other hand is the one thing you must protect. It’s called your private key for a reason because you should never reveal this to anyone. If someone gets your email password, that’s bad because they can start sending emails from your address, but that’s not quite as bad as someone getting your Bitcoin private key because then they can steal all of your Bitcoins by sending them somewhere else. And just like email, once a Bitcoin transaction has been sent, it’s a one way trip. The only way to get it back would be for the person you sent it to to voluntarily send it back. Bitcoin literally works like digital cash. Once you’ve handed it over, the Bitcoin belongs to that other person. And the same goes for when you receive Bitcoin. Once someone sends it to you, it’s yours and no one can take it from you. The only way they could do that is if they knew your private key. And of course now you know never to give this to anyone.

Blockchain tutorial 16: Bitcoin compressed and uncompressed addresses

09:48
This is part 16 of the Blockchain tutorial explaining what Bitcoin compressed and uncompressed addresses are In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. Bitcoin released as open source software in 2009 is a cryptocurrency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto (unidentified person or group of persons). After the introduction of Bitcoin many Bitcoin alternatives were created. These alternate cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins (Litecoin, Dodgecoin etc). Bitcoin's underlying technology is called Blockchain. The Blockchain is a distributed decentralized incorruptible database (ledger) that records blocks of digital information. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. Soon people realises that there many other use cases where the Blockchain technology can be applied and not just as a cryptocurrency application. New Blockchain platforms were created based on the Blockchain technology, one of which is called Ethereum. Ethereum focuses on running programming code, called smart contracts, on any decentralized application. Using the new Blockchain platforms, Blockchain technology can be used in supply chain management, healthcare, real estate, identity management, voting, internet of things, etcetera, just to name a few. Today there is a growing interest in Blockchain not only in the financial sector but also in other sectors. Explaining how Blockchain works is not easy and for many the Blockchain technology remains an elusive concept. This video series tries to explain Blockchain to a large audience but from the bottom up. Keywords often used in Blockchain conversation will be explained. Each Blockchain video is short and to the point. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier. Blockchain/Bitcoin for beginners 3: public/private keys, signatures... and first ever transaction

36:25
Detailed overview of public/private key encryption and live demo of exactly how digital signatures work on Mac, combining public and private keys and hash functions. Welcome to episode 3 of my series on Blockchain/Bitcoin. I'm joined once again by my girlfriend Nadisha who is my classroom pupil... I build on the hash function concepts from the previous episode and explain the basic concepts public and private keys and how to use them to create digital signatures - a key part of the bitcoin infrastructure. We demonstrate in a Mac terminal how you can generate your own keys and encrypt and decrypt and sign your own resources - learning by doing always works. We touch on bitcoin addresses, what they represent and how they are created. Finally I go back for a refresh of the bitcoin blockchain browser and look at the first ever bitcoin transaction in the "Genesis Block" to show what a real bitcoin address looks like. Bitcoin Blockchain browser https://blockchain.info Online hash calculator - great way to practice and familiarise with hash functions - one of the most important building blocks of Blockchain/Bitcoin http://www.fileformat.info/tool/hash.htm Course to date (previous videos) 1. Bitcoin 101 - Multi-Signature Addresses pt1 - Coding This Major Security Improvement

21:45
Just like the Wright brothers, on those first flights at Kitty Hawk, didn't concern themselves that much with landing. And improvements like anti-lock brakes and seat belts help protect passengers in cars. Bitcoin is now in that 'second phase' where security is becoming massively important. Fortunately, because the currency is programmable, anything is really possible. Originally introduced into the bitcoin client a few years ago, multisignature addresses massively more secure than regular ones. Their adoption by all wallet manufacturers is coming. But, for you techies and voyeurs, we'll jump inside the ideas of multi-sig and even program the stuff. Hope you enjoy. All the public and private keys are at the bottom of this description James' code can be found here: https://github.com/wobine/blackboard101 there, you'll see the code for part one and two of this video Jeff Garzik's Bitcoin python library is here https://github.com/jgarzik/python-bitcoinrpc remember to replace his connection.py file with ours for multisigs And a little bit about bitcoind is here https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoind but remember that it really is the most bare-bones bitcoin wallet software, but the one which allows the most programming. we love it. A multisig wallet is already in production: Check it out https://www.bitgo.com/ We're still waiting to see how they use multisig to see if it really works for the end user. And finally, here's our lovely multisig address http://live.bitcore.io/address/35Z3xG92YkW5Xo4ngQw6w5b3Ce6MDw94A8 So cool to see it live and in action. Bitcoin 101 Elliptic Curve Cryptography Part 4 Generating the Public Key in Python

21:22
Vídeo original: https://youtu.be/iB3HcPgm_FI Welcome to part four in our series on Elliptic Curve Cryptography. I this episode we dive into the development of the public key. In just 44 lines of code, with no special functions or imports, we produce the elliptic curve public key for use in Bitcoin. Better still, we walk you through it line by line, constant by constant. Nothing makes the process clearer and easier to understand than seeing it in straight forward code. If you've been wondering about the secp256k1 (arguably the most important piece of code in Bitcoin), well then this is the video for you. This is part 4 of our upcoming series on Elliptic Curves. Because of such strong requests, even though this is part 4, it is the first one we are releasing. In the next few weeks we will release the rest of the series. Enjoy. Blockchain 101 Ep 22 - Bitcoin Change Address

01:04
It is possible to send bitcoins from multiple addresses or send to multiple addresses in one go. For instance, you need to pay Mr Bull 5 Bitcoins and you only have 1, 2, and 2 Bitcoins in addresses A, B and C respectively. Neither wallet has enough to pay him. However, you can send him the Bitcoins from all 3 addresses to Mr Bull. Another scenario, you have 5 Bitcoins in your address. But you only want to send Mr Bull one. You need to inform the miners, “I have 5 Bitcoins, I want to send 1 to Mr Bull, and send the rest to myself.” It could be to either the original address, or to a new one. Don’t forget to do so! Otherwise, miners will take the rest of the Bitcoins as transaction fee. This is how Bitcoin’s change addresses work. Watch the video here! Huobi Pro will post a question in our Tweet via our Twitter account (https://twitter.com/Huobi_Pro) each time we put up an episode of Blockchain 101 post on our Twitter account, we will randomly select 20 people who answered in the format [UIDxxxxxxxx, correct answer] and retweet our post will be entitled to 1 HT each. Bitcoin 101 - Getting Your BTCs out of Your Paper Wallets & Cold Storage - Fun with Sloppy Wallets

10:54
Are your bitcoins stuck in cold storage or on your paper wallet? Sure those are both GREAT places to keep them, but how do you get them out? What does 'sweeping' mean? These ideas are the goal of this video. Hopefully by the end of these videos you will no longer be afraid to take your bitcoins out of the reaches of malware programmers. This is part two of our bitcoin security series. Here's the intro to the series... ========= Bitcoin security? UGH!!! Way too many bitcoins are being stolen by crafty malware programmers. Bitcoin does so many things better than banks (trusts, escrows, programmable money, cheap transfers, instant accounts, etc.), but one area that is not quite so nice, is security. While the bitcoin network, itself, appears bullet-proof, lots of bitcoins are being stolen, via hacking, malware and flaws in online wallets and even google's random number generator. The answer is to get your bitcoins entirely offline, and the two ways to do this are paper wallets and cold storage. The previous video is an introduction to making both, while this video focuses on how to get your bitcoins out of cold storage (to spend, to move to another wallet, etc). James walks you through the software and ideas used in making 'sloppy' offline wallets (which are great to have). He also gives suggestions at making even better offline wallets. This is the first of many videos we will make on bitcoin security, and the least technical. We hope you'll enjoy. Here's the public address to the wallet we sent the funds too...good luck...hope you get there first. https://blockchain.info/address/19ZxxVTac6zxH9a9xqXhtntepTLosFa8F9 Here is the live link to our donation address https://blockchain.info/address/1javsf8GNsudLaDue3dXkKzjtGM8NagQe Feel free to like, subscribe, comment or even drop a little jangly in our bitcoin tip jar 1javsf8GNsudLaDue3dXkKzjtGM8NagQe Welcom to WBN's Bitcoin 101 Blackboard Series -- a full beginner to expert course in bitcoin. There are several types of wallets that provide different ways to store and access your digital currency. Wallets can be broken down into three distinct categories – software, hardware, and paper. Software wallets can be a desktop, mobile or online. Desktop: wallets are downloaded and installed on a PC or laptop. They are only accessible from the single computer in which they are downloaded. Desktop wallets offer one of the highest levels of security however if your computer is hacked or gets a virus there is the possibility that you may lose all your funds. Online: wallets run on the cloud and are accessible from any computing device in any location. While they are more convenient to access, online wallets store your private keys online and are controlled by a third party which makes them more vulnerable to hacking attacks and theft. Mobile: wallets run on an app on your phone and are useful because they can be used anywhere including retail stores. Mobile wallets are usually much smaller and simpler than desktop wallets because of the limited space available on a mobile. Hardware: wallets differ from software wallets in that they store a user’s private keys on a hardware device like a USB. Although hardware wallets make transactions online, they are stored offline which delivers increased security. Hardware wallets can be compatible with several web interfaces and can support different currencies; it just depends on which one you decide to use. What’s more, making a transaction is easy. Users simply plug in their device to any internet enabled computer or device, enter a pin, send currency and confirm. Hardware wallets make it possible to easily transact while also keeping your money offline and away from danger. Paper: wallets are easy to use and provide a very high level of security. While the term paper wallet can simply refer to a physical copy or printout of your public and private keys, it can also refer to a piece of software that is used to securely generate a pair of keys which are then printed. Using a paper wallet is relatively straightforward. Transferring Bitcoin or any other currency to your paper wallet is accomplished by the transfer of funds from your software wallet to the public address shown on your paper wallet. Alternatively, if you want to withdraw or spend currency, all you need to do is transfer funds from your paper wallet to your software wallet. This process, often referred to as ‘sweeping,’ can either be done manually by entering your private keys or by scanning the QR code on the paper wallet. They come in different forms, designed for different types of device. You can even use paper storage to avoid having them on a computer at all. Of course, it is very important to secure and back up your bitcoin wallet. Bitcoins are a modern equivalent of cash and, every day, another merchant starts accepting them as payment. We know how they are generated and how a bitcoin transaction works, but how are they stored? We store fiat cash in a physical wallet, and bitcoin works in a similar way, except it's normally digital. Well, to be absolutely accurate, you don't technically store bitcoins anywhere. What you store are the secure digital keys used to access your public bitcoin addresses and sign transactions. This information is stored in a bitcoin wallet. Bitcoin wallets come in a variety of forms. There are five main types of wallet: desktop, mobile, web, paper and hardware. Here’s how they work. Desktop wallets : If you have already installed the original bitcoin client (Bitcoin Core), then you are running a wallet, but may not even know it. In addition to relaying transactions on the network, this software also enables you to create a bitcoin address for sending and receiving the virtual currency, and to store the private key for it. Mobile wallets: Desktop-based wallets are all very well, but they aren't very useful if you are out on the street, trying to pay for something in a physical store. This is where a mobile wallet comes in handy. Running as an app on your smartphone, the wallet can store the private keys for your bitcoin addresses, and enable you to pay for things directly with your phone. Online wallets: Web-based wallets store your private keys online, on a computer controlled by someone else and connected to the Internet. Several such online services are available, and some of them link to mobile and desktop wallets, replicating your addresses between different devices that you own. Hardware wallets: Hardware wallets are currently very limited in number. These are dedicated devices that can hold private keys electronically and facilitate payments. Paper wallets: One of the most popular and cheapest options for keeping your bitcoins safe is something called a paper wallet. There are several sites offering paper bitcoin wallet services. They will generate a bitcoin address for you and create an image containing two QR codes: one is the public address that you can use to receive bitcoins; the other is the private key, which you can use to spend bitcoins stored at that address. Blockchain tutorial 28: Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 39 (BIP-39) mnemonic words

17:45
This is part 28 of the Blockchain tutorial. In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier. WHAT IS A WALLET -------------------------------- A wallet stores private keys. The word wallet is misleading, it just stores private keys and not the coins. The public addresses are automatically derived from the private keys. If you open your Bitcoin wallet and one of your Bitcoin addresses shows that is has a balance of 5 BTC, than these bitcoins are not actually stored in your wallet. It means that these 5 bitcoins were transferred to your Bitcoin address during a transaction. This transaction (TX) information is stored on the blockchain. Your wallet queries the blockchain and searches for Unspent TX Outputs (UTXO) for all your Bitcoin addresses to display their balances. The bitcoins on these UTXO can be unlocked and transferred to another Bitcoin address using the private keys stored in the wallet. NON-DETERMINISTIC WALLET ------------------------------------------------- Wallets stores private keys but they also create these private keys. The private keys are randomly generated numbers which are not related to each other. You can not derive these private keys with an algorithm. Hence the words "non-deterministic". If you use a non-deterministic wallet you must make regular backups of these private keys. If you have problems with your wallet, you can restore your wallet by importing the backupped private keys. Explaining a non-deterministic wallet (for educational purpose only), see: https://www.mobilefish.com/services/cryptocurrency/cryptocurrency.html DETERMINISTIC WALLET ----------------------------------------- A deterministic wallet uses 12 - 24 words to create a 512 bit seed. These words are called mnemonic words, because they are more easily to remember than this long hexadecimal string. The 512 bit seed is used to create a master private key. This master private key in turn is used to create private keys and corresponding public addresses. Generally speaking using these 12 - 24 words will complete restore your wallet with exactly the same private keys and corresponding public addresses. Hence the word "deterministic". It is imperative that you safely store these 12 - 24 words, without it you have no access to your private keys. To see how an Ethereum deterministic wallet works, see YouTube movie: https://youtu.be/cqz8-hOz_nk BIP-39 ----------- The acronym BIP means Bitcoin Improvement Proposal. BIPs are design documents for introducing features or information to Bitcoin. An overview can be found at: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips BIP-39 describes the implementation of mnemonic words for the generation of deterministic wallets, see: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039.mediawiki BIP-39 is becoming an industry standard which is not only used for Bitcoin wallets but it is also used in Ethereum, Dash and other Altcoin wallets. The wordlist can be found at: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039/bip-0039-wordlists.md For additional security you can allow users to enter a passphrase. Use the Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2 (PBKDF2) together with the mnemonic phrase and salt to produce a 512 bits seed. If an attacker gets its hands on your mnemonic words the passphrase (it you have set it) will prevent the attacker to access the private keys. PBKDF2 is purposefully made slow to make brute force dictionary attack very difficult. The 512 bit seed is used to generate deterministic wallets. How to generate deterministic wallets is explained in BIP-32 and BIP-44. It is important to know that each time you enter a different passphrase it will generate a valid 512 bit seed and thus a valid wallet with valid public and private key pairs. This feature can help you limit your loss after a 5$ wrench attack. You can setup a second deterministic wallet with some coins to satisfy the attacker. If you do not know what a 5$ wrench attack is watch this comic: https://xkcd.com/538/ Storing your passphrase at the same location as your mnemonic words is not recommended and beats the purpose.
